The dark red line indicates US 52, blue lines indicate state highways, bright green lines indicate other local paved roads, and the blue-green lines indicate lesser county paved roads. A dotted line indicates gravel. Getting to the Old Hospital Lodge is easiest from the northwest or southwest. Any other way involves gravel roads and possibly a phone call.

- From Minnesota, go south from Mabel on county 28, straight through Hesper and on for 5 miles to a T-intersection, turn right for 1 mile to Locust (4-way stop, don't miss it).
- From Decorah, go northeast out of town on Locust Road for 8 miles until you reach Locust (4-way stop).
- Go east out of Locust on A26 (Big Canoe Road) for 3 miles to the Big Canoe Church.
- Go north (down the hill) at the fork in the road at the Big Canoe Church (A26 continues straight).
- Go 2 miles down the hill until you reach Highlandville.
- The lodge is on the right.
directions from Decorah ...
- From College Drive in Decorah, turn right at the four-way stop onto Locust Road. Climb the hill out of town and go for 8 miles to another four-way stop at Locust.
- Turn right at the four-way stop and go another 3 miles on A26 (Big Canoe Road) till the road branches at a large church.
- Take the left-hand path off of A26 onto Highlandville Road down the hill.
- Drive down the hill for two miles - you are now in Highlandville.
